Tips for Laundry Success

The Basics:

1. The first step to doing laundry is to sort your clothes into piles by colors. You should have a pile for whites, lights and dark colors.
2. If you just bought new dark-colored items, such as dark navy socks or black pants, you may want to soak those before washing. This will ensure all the excess dye is removed before mixing them with your other clothes. Some dyes will rub onto your wash machine without presoaks.
3. Put towels in a separate pile from your clothes. Towels give off a lint so be sure to use a fabric cling sheet. You may also toss in bed sheets and blankets if they do not require special instructions.
4. As your laundry accumulates, pre-sort it into designated baskets for whites, lights and darks. This way, a load will be ready to throw in the washer whenever you have a minute to spare.
5. While sorting, do not forget to close zippers and clasp hooks. Check pockets to prevent snags and avoid washing tissues, money, lipstick, etc.
6. Streamline the laundry process by incorporating storage solutions and flat working surfaces into your laundry room. This will keep laundry where it belongs and eliminate the need to treat, sort and fold in other rooms of the house.
7. Wash small loads as needed between laundry days. Today's high efficiency washing machines use substantially less water and energy than a conventional top-loading washer, which means you can do small loads when you have time, rather than waiting for the basket to fill up.
8. Do not overload the washer or dryer. Clothes come out cleaner and less wrinkled when given more room.
